Default Caribou/Reindeer moss as a survival food

I have read a little and heard about Caribou/Reindeer moss (Cladonia rangiferina) being used as a food by various nothern peoples in the circumpolar regions.
Just wondering if anyone has ever used it as a survival food ? Read somewhere that it had to be cooked thoroughly due to the acids in the plant. Any additional information would be appreciated. Thanks

Have eaten it in aqutaq and have eaten it out hunting to try it. My cousins have said it is a food to eat when nothing else is available.

I would imagine that it is very low in calories like most plants like this. It would make your stomach feel better from being full but not provide much energy unless you ate lots. Look at how caribout must almost constantly eat to keep going on it. My opinion, anyhow.
