Smile What do you like about boating?

Tell you what guys...Summer can't come soon enough! I think I pull the maps/gps out at least 100 times a week.

It's funny that on the forum we all go back and forth on inboard vs. outboard, this and that.

But when it comes right down to it, the thing I love about boating is:
I think it is true that boaters always wave at each other when passing by. I haven't ever seen a boater leave another boater when help is needed or broke on shore, always lending a helping hand.

I can't forget the other thing that I like about boating is: The ability to hop in the boat and have a sense of adventure (Hunting fishing and exploring), seeing the wild and making memories for my son which is at the top for me.

Can wait to hit the rivers! WINTER GO AWAY!

Fishing, if it wasn't for fishing I would not own a hole in the water to throw money AKA a boat.

    Default I don't like boating.

I don't care for boating/yachting. I like where the boat gets me. The faster the boat can get me from point A to point B the better. So it's the adventure of the trip I like. I have done a fair share of sailing and that's not for me. Fire up them ponies boys, lets go!!!

I like getting out to places few others will see. Love the smell of the salt and seeing the marine mammals.

    Catching fish is a bonus.

    Default Another World

It's like, when I work on my boat on the trailer, to the point I put in in the water, to heading out for parts known (and unknown), it's a completely different world than the one in which I live my daily life.

It's another mind set, another way of thinking, another world. I love to concentrate on the different procedures it takes to launch the boat, moor to the dock, pre-check starting procedures, fire up the gps and make my way out of the harbor. And this is on one of the dinkiest little open boats I know of out of Homer!

I just like having to use my brain on something other than the stuff I have to deal with every regular day in town. It's an "advencha!" every time we go out on the water.

I've become a thoroughly competent boater through 30 years of sailing and motorboating on Kachemak Bay. What a blast...

I like the blood curdling screams when I spin it out.

I love to explore. See the wildlife.

I really love to fish. I even catch a few (between naps of course).

I also enjoy most of the people out there. Conversation is good thing.

    Default freedom

I like the freedom my boats offer me. I get to go to new places and explore along the way. New waterways offer adventure at every bend. I like small creeks, skinny water, and obstacles that challenge my abilities. I like to go places others don't care to. I like jumping log jams and beaver dams, especially with friends. I like focusing on driving and enjoying the scenery as a means to forget the daily drudgeries of work and life.
I'm lucky. I live on the Chena. Normally one of 3 different boats are in the water at all times. From my house I can decide upriver or down, and the adventure starts there. I like most people on the water and do what I can to ignore or avoid the others. I like the brotherhood found in boating. I like the smell of 2 stroke, especially when I use avgas.
I don't like the Yukon in and of itself, but I do like that it gets me to where I want to be.

    Thumbs up

I like the challenge of running the river and it is always a new river even tho I've run it before.

Also love just parking the boat, anchor out, watching the river and the clouds roll by.

    Potbuilder,

You're gonna have to stop posting those kinds of pictures or I'll have to flag you for pornographic material - you got me going and panting hard!!!! MY GOD MAN - it's still December. We still have almost 4 months before the shrimp quest renews for another season. Have mercy on us .
As for the original posts, you guys have pretty much summed it up for me. Being on the water, exploring new areas, the sights, sounds and smells (all with friends and adult beverages), killing (OOPS "harvesting") various seafoods - how could it possibly be any better?? Oh and don't forget - spending bundles of money. It's as good as it gets!!

    Default Pretty basic...

but I love the feeling of stepping into the boat the first time of the season (while it's in the water!). Love that "floaty" gentle feeling; even in the river (as we do not have a saltwater boat---yet). Used to love the smell of the 2-stroke but now the instant start of the pushbutton 25 4-stroke Yamaha we have now more than makes up for that! Just the feeling of skimming on the water is cool, no matter where we are-catching fish or not. Love running up & down the Kenai out in the Sterling area even if just to waste gas.

ok where do i start? i think there are three things that make
boating great for me. 1 the feeling i get when i leave the harbor all the stess of city life just leaves. 2 the enjoyment i have rafting up with 5,6,7 or more freinds out in a cove somewhere. 3 the sound of the water splashing against the baot at night. i sleep so go on the water
knowing tommorrow will be another day on the water!!!

I like tinkering with the boat--something always needs fixing or could use some improvement. I like the the challenges--navigation, tides and currents, weather issues, docking, etc.--not huge challenges, but not trivial either. I like getting underway, and setting off a new trip/adventure. I like anchoring up in a cove I've never been to before, having a good meal, and ending the day with a cigar and a glass of scotch.

I like just going and going and going. Mostly where others don't go but it's also a lot of fun to go with my buddies.

And then there's pulling up to a gravel bar, throwing out the lawn chairs, popping open a beer, and just watching the silt go by......

And then there's outwitting a grayling and letting it go.....

And jumping beaver dams and logs......

    And exploring tiny little streams.....
