Default Elk hunt to remember !!!

My son-n-law and his hunting partner had a a good hair raising elk hunt on Afognak .
My son-n-law was along for the back up gun he did not have a tag .
They downed an elk and it happened to be huge so they was only able to pack out half .
They hung the other half in trees and made their way back to camp . Just outside of their camp they herd a lot of ruckus going on so they approached slowly and sure enough a bear was tearing up their camp .
It tore and ripped their tent ,sleeping pads and the gear they had in the trees . To top it off the bear bit holes in their raft .
They fired a couple shots and the bear did not even flinch so all they could do is wait .
He did not hang around long and after he left they straightened out the camp and got it back in order .
They took the meat away from camp farther than their food which the bear did not get and went after the rest of the elk .
As they approached where the elk was taken they could hear a ruckus going on .
Yep you got it ,two bears having a hay day over the elk that was tied up in the trees .
Again they fired and the bears did not even notice they were there . All they could do is watch as the bears ate and drug away the meat .
They went back to camp and fuzzy was back tearing up jack again .
Tore the tent down and drug it about 20 yards from where they had it set up .
That night they repaired the raft and the next day broke camp and headed out .
All in all they had an interesting time . He does have alot of gear to be replaced .

Guess they'll be looking to get a bear fence for next time. That's ashame all the torn-up gear and lost meat.

If they have homeowners insurance it should cover the damage. Glad they made it back safe and sound.

Glad that they came out ok. Sounds like something like that could have turned out ugly. Sorry to hear about all of the gear. I'd be curious about the insurace, didn't even think that was possible. You would have to consider if it was worth it due to the fact that insurance companies like to drop you or raise the rates after you file one.

Man Rick that sounds like one heck of a rough hunt! Sure hope the insurance company works with them on that one. Do you have any pics of the elk or the destroyed camp?

Default Who had the bear tag!!

    RR,

I take it that neither one had a bear tag. I would be returning with a bear tag as well next season. GLad they made it out unharmed.

You got it no bear tags just the one elk tag .
I will see if I can get some pictures sent to me .
That place is infested with bears .
I hunted blacktail a few years ago and after one day we called it quits .
At one time in the matter of half an hour we had 8 bears around us . No stand offs which was a good thing .We went back to the beach and waited for the boat to pick us up .

Afognak Sure has its share of bears, last time I was there I saw 19 in 200 yards of beach
I choose to fly fish, not because its easy, but because its hard.

He said the bear might of went crazy and tore up camp after he bit the propane bottle !!!!! Then the bear washed his mouth out with his water purifier . Not a nice bear .
