    Default Posting Pictures

One of the most frequent questions that we get here is how to post a picture. Following are some of the slides from a presentation we did this past spring at the Great Alaska Sportsman Show. These slides compare two of the photo posting options - attaching the file here or hosting it elsewhere. The slides focus specifically on photobucket.com as a photo hosting option, but other sites are available as well. (Google photos, picassa, etc.) Hopefully the following will be of help for those who are frustrated by this process.

Note: If you cannot see the pictures in the following thread, it may be due to a filter on your computer or your employer's network. Some filters block photo-hosting sites such as photobucket.com

When linking photos from another site (via IMG code), why the four photo limit? Also if any of the smiley face gifs are linked in the text, they take up a slot for the limited numer of phtos (took me a while to figure that one out). It would be nice if the limit were raised to at least six or eight. Unless you are intentionally trying to encourage more threads/posts If that's the case you may consider there are personalities out there (like mine) that if it's a hassle will end up posting less

    Default pics moved or deleted?

    Brian, or anyone,

I had some pics on a post and about eight hours later they were "moved or deleted" how did that happen?

They were on photobucket and all I can figure is that I went over there after posting and shifted stuff around to new files to organize them.

So did I move them away from the link they needed for the post?

Is there a way I can reinsert them to the old post as there is description of a reloading system in detail that kind of needs the pics to make sense?

I reinserted them two posts down so maybe they'll stay there?

I believe that once you move stuff around in your photobucket account, the IMG code that you post is different. I suspect that Brian or one of the other mods could enter the new ones for you.

This is all fine & good if you want to put a photo on Photo Bucket, but what if I want to use a shot that is on my website? Do I just type in [IMG]http://jimstrutz.com/images/Anch%20Skyline%20small.jpg ?

    That doesn't seem to work.

    Nope. That doesn't work either.

You had it right the first time, and merely needed to get the syntax correct:

    [img]http://jimstrutz.com/images/Anch%20Skyline%20small.jpg[/img]

Here's what that does (i.e., your image) when not "fixed" so that it is not parsed (the highlighting prevents it from being parsed as a regular command).

Note that you are now obliged to retain an image at that URL for as long as this thread exists! :-)

    Default commands and syntax help

It occurred to me that this might be a good time and place to post something explaining how to learn about which formatting commands are available and what the proper syntax is. It isn't easy to find!

Start a "reply to thread" to get a message input window, and then scroll all the way down to the end of the page. At the bottom of the page, on the left side, is a box with a window title "Posting Rules". If that is all there is, click on the button at the right side of the title. Whatever, there should be a list in the box that includes these items:

    BB code is On
    Smilies are On
    [IMG] code is On
    HTML code is Off

Click on the first word in one of those lines and the browser will provide a new page that shows format commands and syntax. Not all of the commands work, but the ones that do have the syntax as shown.
