Fairbanks has a hiking and climbing group.
That's the only area that I have knowledge about...
...so if you are interested in making the drive or flight in this direction, I could give you more tips.

George - Every sunday in the Anchorage Daily News they print an outdoors calendar, and most weeks they list a weekly hike put on by a local group. I don't have any experience with them, but they have a website you can visit and a contact phone number for questions. Looks like this week they'll be hiking Thursday from the Glen Alps trailhead.

Default Valley group and great website on hikes ...

There is a club in the Mat Su Valley called Valley Mounatin Bikers and Hikers who meet regularly and post thier hikes in the paper as mentioned above

Their website link is - http://www.vmbah.org/

Also the following website has excellent trail descriptions along with pictures and trail maps of the best hikes in SouthCentral Alaska - http://www.akhs.atfreeweb.com/search_hikes.htm

If you're new to the area I'd suggest two of the most popular and fairly easy day hikes to start - "Flattop" and "Bodenburg Butte"

    Good Luck!

    Check these guys out:

They do a lot of hikes in the Anchorage area. I have been out with them several times. It's a good way to check out some new hikes. On the other hand, if you are feeling adventurous, there is a world of hiking that you can discover on your own all within 20 minutes of Anchorage. Go to REI and buy the Chugach State Park map. It has really good USGS maps of the mountains near Anchorage, showing trailheads, paths, elevations, and other features. PM me if you want some ideas of good hikes to get your feet wet. If you'd rather go with a group, the MCA is active and safe. Enjoy!!!

Also... www.summitpost.org is a GREAT resource where you could find area climbers to climb and hike with you as well.

    ps.
Go and get the recent Black Diamond Ice Climbing 2007-2008 Edition and look at the back cover.
    Classic. Absolutely, hands down classic.
    Here is the hint...
Why shouldn't you attach your crampons to your harness?
