    Default Denali

Has anyone on here done some serious photography during the Denali Road Lottery? I have been drawn for the Monday. I am trying to decide if I should cover alot of road or concentrate my efforts in a few key areas. What is the earliest I can get in there? Thanks for any info!!

Mr. G., don't believe there is an on-line app for this one. You have to mail in a check for the $10 and you indicate the dates you wish to go on the back of the envelope. Here is the link I use:

I just went back and looked again. Makes since now. Is it hard to get a permit? Are there a lot of people that apply?

I recommend you plan on driving the whole road, and stop when the wildlife presents itself. If you get there early enough (before 9am) you should be able to get to Wonder Lake and back before dark, plus have time to stop many times for photo ops.

UNless they have changed something you can arrive at the Wilderness Access Center at 6am and be on the road by 6:30 so long as there isn't a lot of people waiting.

Or, if you really want to be smart you'll get reservations for the Teklinika River campground on Sunday night. Show up Sunday afternoon, pick up your camping permit and road permit for Monday, drive to Teklinika (mile 29), camp for the night, get up at 6am on Monday and head west to see the sights, getting a jump on all the people who are back at mile 0 standing in line

The campground may already be full, check out http://reservedenali.com/ for reservations.

I guess it is a little tough to get drawn. I know alot of folks who put in this year but have only found 1 person I know that was also drawn. This is the first time in 5 tries that I was drawn. I only put my name in. I don't do every family members name like alot of folks do.

Unfortunately, it shows the campground is closed effective Sep 14th.

I am fairly certain that is incorrect info. I recommend you call the 1800 number to double check. Tek has been open for road lottery every year for a long time now.

    Eric,
Depends what you are trying to find. Most of the moose are located from mile 7-12 with the occassional caribou tossed in. Drive out to Stony Pass if you are looking for bear. I was there on Monday and we seen 9 different grizzlies within a 15 mile stretch of road. My passion is huge moose and although they can be found most anywhere in the park mile 7-12 is where they move to during the rut. Another group bands together out towards Wonder Lake.
    Good luck

Thanks AKFlyer, you were correct! Called Denali bright and early this am. They actually are closed on the 14th unless you have a road lottery ticket. So I got the night of the 16th. This will help out a lot!! Thanks again!

I got to go last year with family. Beats the Heck out of riding the 11-hour bus, no doubt.

All I can say is take your time. We had Dall sheep and grizzlies just a few feet from our rig. Ended up with a lot of nice shots. Bring lots of film or memory cards, put the camera on motor drive and make movies! HA!

Let us know how you do and have a great time.

Sorry, I couldn't help you, I just found this Forum. How'd it go? Sheesh, I could have been a personal guide for you.

Post a link to some photos when you get a chance.
