Thread: Russian river questions?

  1. #1

    Question Russian river questions?

What's biting in the Russian near the confluence right now? Are there still reds in the river? Any silvers in there yet? Is dollie or rainbow fishing good right now? Any recommended lures for Dollies and rainbows in there? I have always chosen to stay away from the russian other than for sight seeing, but I have some friends who thought it might be worth a day trip to try for anything we could catch (and the sights). Not concerned about keeping fish just hoping for a lot of action. Any current info or suggestions would be great.
    Thank you,
    Greg

I do believe that the Russian closed for reds yesterday, but is still open for silvers. Also, it is now legal to use single hook artificial lures, so if you prefer spinners to flies, that is now an option. Rainbow and Dollie fishing should remain stellar into late fall, particularly with flesh and egg patterns. If you go, let us know how you do.

I saw no silvers today, a suprising number of bright reds for this time of the year (yes I know the different, I ID fish professionally thank you...) too bad it closed or I'd of had an easy limit in like 10 minutes.
I choose to fly fish, not because its easy, but because its hard.

Sorry AKP but what "professional license" do you have that makes you a professional fish identifier? Does it take a four or six year degree to obtain that and what professional exam does one take to obtain a professional license?

I checked with the licensing site for the state of Alaska and I do not see that you have ever held any professional licenses for guiding and/or for fish identifying.

Yea I "enumerated sockeye" this summer my job was to be able to tell the difference between the salmon...

Anyway they were sockeye, beleive me I took a good long look and a few cast with some silver gear just to make sure... (that and I've never seen 100 silvers in a school in the russian before ever...)

Oh the trout fishing is steller right now, the lack of sockeye is making them super hungry!

I picked my first fish out of a gillnet in 1986, and the last season I was out was 2002...When were you born again?
