    Default Caribou Creek

This weekend I am going to take Squaw Creek Trail to Caribou Creek. If the water is not running to high, anybody know how far a machine can go up the creek? I would like to leave a truck and trailer at Pinochle Trail Head if I thought I could make it 5 miles up Caribou Creek and intercept Hicks Creek Trail.

    Appreciate any insight.

I haven't tried it but I can put in my 2 cents if you want. If you can keep crossing Caribou an uncountable number of times after you get to it from the squaw creek trail you can come out to the Pinchole trail. Maybe 5 miles as the crow flies, longer the way you have to do it. It all depends on water level like you said. My guess is no way in mid august on atvs Knowing the area I'm thinking late september if it isn't rainy. Criss crossing those creeks in that area is harder going upstream. The current is strong and if only up to the top of the tires you still must enter the water at a 45 degree angle (down) to the banks. We saw a guy enter the creek and try go straight across a few years ago where the Pinochle trail comes out at Caribou. The machine went tumbling down the creek and he barely made it to shore. Carry a hundred feet of rope and emergency gear with you. Good luck and tell us how it went.

Caribou would have to be pretty low. The river valley is pretty narrow just upstream from where Alfred creek meets it.

You got that right. That's why on all the maps the trail ends right there at Alfred Creek

Default Squaw to Divide via Caribou

From Squaw upstream to Alfred, you will be stopped at a canyon before you get to Alfred. The canyon is not passable. Same is true just downstream from Divide creek and there is another canyon just past that one. If you get past the canyons via the high country then you have to get up and down the bluffs.

    Default Thanks for the info

Thanks for the info folks. Maybe I will take a look next month but it does not sound likely. No matter how I travel, I hate returning the same way I go in. Ended up making first Kings River trip as I only had part of a day. It was better than I expected. Had a bit of a close call though. I ws heading up a steep hil with lose rocks and leaning on the handle bars. At the worst possible time, the machine quit. Locked the brakes but it would not hold on the lose rocks. Jumped on the running boards and surfed down about 40 feet. Reason for machine shutting down? While I was leaning over the bars, I hit the kill switch at the worst possible time. Not one of my better moves!!!!!!
