    Default squid as bait

Has any one tried using squid as bait in South Central AK? I know that it is common place in other areas but never encountered it hear. I have seen squid jigs used, so I thought that it might work well.

Default both sqid and octopus for halibut

and like cutter said, it stays on your hook better. the halibut clearly do not go for it as much as herring though, probably because it does not attract them like herring oil does. I like to put a little piece on with a piece of herring. If the fish steals your herring without hooking, it will sometimes come back for the squid.

Hootchies look like squid, so it makes sense. Until 4 days ago, I had never figured there were many squid around for SE salmon to eat in the salt.... then we pulled a 12# coho with a belly full of 8" squid.

I always try to "flag" my herring with squid or octopus when bottom fishing... as stated, it stays on the hook better, and the tentacles give it a good life-like appearance while jigging.... even if that sort of thing doesn't matter, it LOOKS good!
