Default leupold scope hole in tube

I recently purchased a used VXiii 4.5-14x50 with side focus and a 30mm tube. I has a small shallow hole in the tube about where the front ring would be when mounted. It has not been drilled, it is a factory indent. I looked up several sites on line and have not found the purpose of this hole. I own several Leupold scopes and this is the only one that has it. I will call Leupold tomorrow, has anyone else seen this. Thanks

I believe it is a punch placed to allow inner spring place to rest based on what I have read. Hopefully someone like gunbugs will respond if I am wrong.

If my memory serves me, I think AKBEE is correct.
"A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind."
