Default Old lab health problems ?

I would like you guys opinion on surgery on a 15 year old lab . His issues that he has developed over the last few months are a pretty severe coughing and greatly enlarged testicle and fatty cyst under his right front leg. Vet says put him to sleep and remove testicle and cyst and go from there. he doesnít seem to be in pain and Iím concerned about putting him under for the surgery . I know heís old and donít want to loose him so Iím confused on how to move forward. Should I let his issues ride and just make sure he isnít hurting or take the chance on doing the surgery and hope he comes through it ok and it improves his quality of life?

That's a tough call man. 15 years with a lab is great! If it were me I would no do surgery unless the cyst are causing him pain or disrupting his daily life.

Sadly, I agree with Mr. Grayson. 15 is pretty good, and why cause him the trauma of surgery? I say make him comfortable and let him ride off over the bridge in his own time.

Putting my lab down was the hardest thing I have ever done. He was just unique in so many ways and the best friend I will ever have. My vet gave me this after I did what I had to do.
    The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this ó the last battle ó can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
    Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close ó we two ó these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

    I am a vet.
    My recommendation:
pay for a second opinion. Get another point of view.
ultimately it comes down to you and your relationship with your dog. No one knows your dog like you do. If heís happy, eating, not bothered by his testicle and cyst, you wouldnít be wrong in letting him live with it and be happy.
if he is having problems, then the next decision would be cut or say goodbye. But the bigger they get, the harder the surgery on him.
removing a testicle in a 15 year old dog can come with some complications, as can a big cyst under a leg. These are not comfortable surgeries in an old boy.
Sometimes we have to remind ourselves ďjust because we can doesnít mean we should.Ē
second opinion would be your best bet.

Thanks guys . he doesnít seem to be in any pain and gets around like a pup for short periods then slows to his real age pace. So I think heís happy and not hurting . the cough bothers him while heís coughing but as soon as the short fit is over he seems fine again . I think me and him will have to spend the time he has left with him laying beside my chair on his bed getting regular petting, ear scratches and all the treats he wants!! When when he starts to look like itís causing him to suffer ill be sucking it up and try and do the right thing for HIM . 5E048EC8-5F45-4406-BB07-CFBB52CE3D51.jpg
