Those are some big cod. We got quite a few of them this summer while jigging for halibut. Found them to be quite wormy, one so much so that we ended up not being able to keep much meat. We started fileting them immediately after getting them into the boat, it helped quite a bit, I think...

Is that your experience as well or was I just unfortunate with getting some wormy fish this year?

The amount of worms I notice in rockfish and Pcod vary, but seems rockfish in bays have more worms than those out in open ocean where as cod it varys.

Amen to that! I'll take cod everyday over halibut. It's a bit more moist and actually tastes like something. So many clients think cod is substandard until they fish with me; I consider it a bonus when ya get into em. Not a glamorous game fish like Jeff pointed out but so worth it. As far as worms I wonder if it something to with time of year and spawning? When we get em to the boat I keep only the ones that look "healthy"; firm bodies, good color, no weird sores or anything on em.

How are most of you guys cleaning them? I remember taking an Indian friend of mine halibut fishing one time, and when we caught a couple cod, he just stood them upright, cut down at a slight angle behind the head to the backbone, and sliced that top piece of meat off down to the tail. He sad something about it being the only piece worth messing with?

I lay em down and just follow the bones from the top down going over not thru the rib cage leaving most of the belly intact on the carcass. The good meat is that top shoulder section but once past the ribs the whole tail section from the top down is fine; all comes off in one piece

sounds pretty close to the same way we clean eel pout/burbot. Backstraps and tail meat
