    Default Instapot and Wild Game

    Does anyone on here cook with an Instapot? We picked one up last year and have used it a few times, but I haven't taken the time to really learn how to use it well.

    Any recipes using wild game would be much appreciated, as would any general tips. Thanks!

    We also bought one last year and have also only used it a handful of times with wild game. That said, the recipes that I have gotten off of YouTube have turned out very good. Another good place to look is allrecipes.com.

    Add something to moisten the meat. I found it dried caribou out pretty bad if I didnít add enough liquid. That was a roast though.

    We've used it with roasts, chicken, and pork so far. It works really well and hasn't dried out anything yet.
    Supposed to make really good spaghetti and meatballs as well.

    What do you guys add to make the roasts? I was raised on crock pot meals with flavorless meat and soggy carrots. I want something flavorful and rich. Open to all suggestions!

    Couple bacon strips helps
    Add a packet of brown gravy mix, really helps.

    Biggest thing I found is cut of meat though. A roast with no natural marbling or bone with marrow and cartilage will be on the dry side. The absolute best roasts we have discovered are the moose jumps and deer neck roasts. Hand saw them up, none in, layers of fat, etc...
    We pressure cook these and they will blow away a prime rib roast. Pressure cooker does it in under an hour all said and done. Add turnips, rudabeggies , onions, etc.... Moose hump is phenomenal!

    Have to agree with Brian, veggies cooked in the crock pot come out a little mushy, but that's never seemed to bother anyone in this household. The Petty Officer in charge of laundry and morale starts off with a packet of onion soup, then the meat, with the veggies (Onions, Carrots, etc) on top. Cook it for 6 hours on low and the meat still slices nicely. Cook it longer and the meat falls apart. either way, nice slices or "pulled" moose makes great sandwiches the next day (Provided there is any left over). the liquid in the bottom of the crock pot makes an excellent gravy, which when applied liberally to the dry game meat counter acts some of the dry effect.

    Try some ĎBetter Than Bullioní paste to your pot. It comes in a fist size jar. Excellent help with flavor. Also Lipton Onion soup to any pot gives flavor.

    I'm a big fan of instant pot and moose. The Instant pot does an incredible job on moose ribs. 35 min in the pot then a 5min on the grill is hard to beat. And that lower shank meat that's so full of tendons it's hard to grind comes out completely tender, almost buttery out of the instant pot. Does a wonderful job on roast too, so easy and delicious. It's worth having an IP just for the great job it does on rice, beans and steel cut oats!

    Cambells slow cooker packets , works great. In a crock pot.

    I love my Instapot, have made steak chili, chicken tortilla soup, meat loaf, ham and bean soup, and my favorite beef short ribs !

    The ability to sear the meat first with onions and garlic really changes the texture and flavor than typical crock pot, I usually add small
    bit of wild rice mix also.

    Made a moose roast that came out excellent. Now I need to find the recipe. I need to use it more to get used to using it regularly as it's pretty convenient to slow cook something and be able to program it and let it run all day.

    Adding a diced onion and a cup of bone broth with your favorite seasoning does it for us. Chopped carrots have turned out tender, but not soggy.
    Just did some baby potatoes wrapped in tinfoil and they were superb!

    Well folks,
    My Mother in Law (a great lady) thought my life was incompletewithout an instant pot for my birthday. So I now have a 6qt model on thecounter. Iím trying to figure out what it does that I havenít been doingalready. Any more suggestions are welcomed.

    My wife uses Instapot all the time for moose and caribou. Weíve had stews, chili, roasts etc. Iím lazy and havenít read the manual which I probably should.

    Instapot or new pressure cooker compared to crockpot is not fair. The crockpots are awesome for stews and such- as long as you add vegetables later so not too soggy. The new pots are amazing! You can steam vegetables in minutes, remove them and brown a roast, then add sauces, cook roast in very short order, add potatoes which are done in 3 minutes! We just got one and are amazed how quick and tender. Wife is taking a class at Allen and Peterson this coming week just for using the cooker- it is that great.

    Never mind what I was thinking, lol, as I just saw the post about adding vegi's later to a crock pot, lol....that's the key for that as they say....tender meat takes time vegetables do not....I'll stick to the 2 things I grew up with and that's a crock pot and or a heavy dutch oven....cheers....

    Before I got my Instapot, I was using my pressure cooker to make chili. Didn't want to cook the beans right in the aluminum so I half filled quart jars with beans and filled the jars with water. No top on them. Beans were done fast. Finished the recipe in a cast iron pot. Now I use the instapot. Much easier.

    I totally understand what you are saying, however if time is short it is nice to have a meal such as a roast, potatoes, carrots, etc all cooked in 30 minutes and still taste great. It will not replace the crock pot- just used when useful.
