i think birds just trickled through all season in the fair weather.we never saw big groups?the sunday and monday of the first freeze and snow storm we saw thousands of geese and ducks push through portage valley. even got a few . on tuesday it went clear and froze up everything and they were gone. as stated in beginning of post a very odd year for our group. i wish others from beluga to the valley would take a moment and tell us how their season went and what they observed

ya lower kenai gets absolutely filled with mergansers this time of year. its disgusting how many there are. Half of them cant even get lift off because they are so full of smolt. We would do well on normal ducks when all the other lakes and big water freezes up.

I saw the same thing in Portage on 27-28 Oct before the snow and freeze. Buddy went that Monday and didn't see squat.

Pretty sure most of the smolt leave the river in the spring. I don't doubt the mergies were stuffed with something, but probably not smolt.

What ever they were they were silver and 1-3” long. At one point I had number flocks fly over my head and shot a few that landed on land and when they hit they coughed up tons of small fish.
