We usually do better than average and we expect to every year.
There is some technique to dip netting particularly from a boat where a person can do better than average by knowing what they're doing.
I'm going on Wednesday and as usual I expect to do better than average.
    We will see!

kasilofchrisn - hey man, I’ve been waiting to hear about, what I can only expect to be your above average dip netting report from the Wednesday you referred to.

Whenever I read your above post I wonder if you are one of the children from Lake Wobegone.

Well, that's the news from Lake Wobegon, where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average."

Don't know if kasilof chrisn even went this summer, but looking at the violations on ast reports some folks did pretty well ! At least until they got busted. No mention of whether their catch is confiscated, just that measly $110 fine. Don't care how skilled you are,it is a matter of timing. There has to be a very large pulse of fish entering the river to enable one to stick a dipnet amongst hundreds of others and pull out a fish. One river cannot be the breadbasket for all of alaska. We either need to shut down this chaotic, unsafe fishery or open every river in the state to dipnetting

    Ok here's how it went.
Picked up three in the first 20 minutes
Then got another 4 in the next hour and a half.
My buddy who was driving is disabled and was having a rough day pain wise.
He's going through some new pain management and a reduction in meds.
Now he just can't do nearly as much as he used to before he's hurting pretty good.
Especially when your bouncing around on the river with all those boat wakes.
So we had to make a quick decision based on the tide at the ramp and the ramp closure.
We decided to leave for the day.
I ended up getting the rest of what I needed from the Kasilof river as the fishing there was pretty good the day I went.

I watched a guy running the gauntlet solo last Wednesday pull more fish in his boat with one net than my boat did with two netters and me with the sole responsibility of driving. We were fishing essentially the same run, but he was always in the fish. I'd say there is obviously some skill involved, and he seemed to know exactly where to be positioned as the tide dropped.

Yeah....you pretty much do have to have a net actually in the water.....

    I've seen it many times.
Some people just catch more fish.
Especially from a boat there can be some things that help people catch more fish.
Hitting certain spots that tend to have the fish group up in that area.
Speed can make a huge difference.
When the tide starts coming in and many boats are standing still because they haven't sped up versus moving a little faster and powering into the fish helps get more fish trapped in your net. Versus bouncing off or seeing your net and avoiding it.
When your moving just a bit faster by the time the fish realize there's a net it's too late.
Last year's others were getting 30-40 fish and we got 76 on the same day in the same fishing time.
Other years people were getting 25-35 and we got 55 same day same, amount of time, and same number of nets.

totally agree....fisheries in which folks are falling overboard and drowning, ramming each other with purse seiners, and allowing vessels to sink and leak petrochemicals all over the place are pretty unsafe and chaotic!....shut em down....

We should shut down the highway from Anchorage to Kenai, while we're at it.
