defending your meat
This kind of started in another thread when I was asking about bear fences and it started to go in a different direction. I thought that it might be a good idea to start a new one. I'm curious as to some of the methods used by members in defending their meat caches against bears. One member made an intesting suggestion using a couple of bottles of ammonia covered in grease and when the bear bites that they will take off quick. Has anybody else used this method. I also saw where one other member recommended critter getters. I'm doing my 1st 10 day float in 25a this sept and would appreciate some shared wisdom on the subject and I'm sure that there are others that would be interested as well.
Sleep on top of your meat!
You do not defend hanging quarters. You hang them where you have some visual contact. That's all.
Hang your meat high enough in a tree to be out-of-reach.
Defend your boat. It'll smell like blood, no matter how clean you think it is.
No boat? No go home.
Can't beat our meat!
In Alaska you will find that "You might beat our PRICES, but you can't beat our MEAT!"
Sounds like the voice of experience.

Maybe I should have said "protect" or "detour". I understand the idea of hanging but from what I understand that may not always be possible so I was looking for additional ideas. It does sound like there might be as raft story there, is there??

Unfortunately I'm a retired Marine still living in Jacksonville NC instead of Alaska. I keep threatening my wife that we are going to move there.
