    Default Haul Road Report 2017

    Hi Guys,
I didn't see a 2017 thread up yet so I thought I'd get one started. I was going to do a float hunt up there but had to cancel due to recent regulation changes and hunt the Road instead. Just did a short trip and hunted from Aug 1-4. Temps were in the high 60's and really buggy after the rain showers. If it wasn't raining then the wind was gusting 10-15 knots. Road construction went from Deadhorse south for about 80 miles. Lots of trucks hauling rocks and gravel. We got hit five times from rocks falling off the sidedumpr trucks. Lots of muskox around Happy Valley, a few herds of caribou came through a bit south of that. Each had a decent number of nice bulls. Hunted pretty hard for three days and then got this guy on my last hunt! Overall a great Haul Road trip! Do check the temps before you go and get ice at Cold Foot if its going to be hot! That saved our meat! Good hunting to all!

Looks like they had some snow up there. There was a dusting of snow around Toolik lake. Probably more near the pass. Be careful on the roads.

I'm headed up there in 2 weeks as well. Last I heard there's caribou between happy valley and pump 1 area. Smaller groups of cows (10-20) and bulls are still bachelored up in 2s and 3s. The weather has been below freezing at night and high 40s to low 50s during the day.

Me and the boyfriend headed up last Friday and just returned today. We ran into rain, snow, hail, wind, thunder and lightening, but never in freezing tempatures. We saw 2-3 bulls a day from toolik to happy valley. Defiantly smaller amount of caribou this year compared to last year. No caribou in freezer this time but caught some nice grayling lol.

If you are heading up soon, bring some snow gear. That area got a few inches of snow recently. A sled works great to pull gear and caribou.
Here is a link to some cameras set up at Toolik Lake so you can check the weather.

Just got back from the haul road. There was a nice snow blanket from the pass thru pump sta- 2. The temps were in the teens at night and mid 30s at mid day. It warmed up into the high 40s yesterday and started to melt a lot of the snow off. We saw the majority of caribou from happy valley to pump sta- 2. Very few bulls were seen and we had to cut our trip short because of car issues. The herd isn't what it used to be. I remember going up there in 2008 and seeing caribou in every direction. They are few and far between these days.
