Thread: Black bears hides in July?

Default Black bears hides in July?

Is it pretty tough to find a black bear without rub marks this time of year? I am heading out of Homer for a 3 day trip and am wondering what to expect. I will be hunting the Port Dick area. Should I be picky or should I expect them all to be poor.

    Default hit and miss

This definitely isn't the time of year to go out hunting for a bear rug, but occasionally you'll come across one that looks pretty good even in July. I killed a cinnamon a couple years ago at the end of July that was nice enough for me to give to a friend for a rug.
By mid-late August they should be looking pretty good. I've killed several bears around that time that would have made fine rugs.

Rule of thumb for many years: Don't shoot bears during June/July/August.

    Thumbs up

As I left my house this morning up on Skyline drive here in Homer I watched a beautiful black bear with a full coat and not one rub mark on him/her walking in my yard about 25 feet away .
    Love Alaska !!!!!!!

That depends on why you want to kill a bear. If you're hunting for meat, the best time is as soon as the blueberries get ripe. If you're just hunting for the hide, early spring or late fall is obviously better.
