    Default Big Su breakup

Anyone flown over the Big Su lately? Wondering if there is any open water starting to show up around the mouths of tribs or at the confluence with the Talkeetna Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If the camera at the Deshka Landing was working we could maybe get an idea what is going on with the river. It is stuck at 4-7-2016 12:33pm

Most years you can plan the first riverboat trip for Mother's Day weekend. Smaller creeks will go out earlier but they'll be running high. My snowgo is put away but I'm sure guys are still running up and down the rivers.

Big Su still has traffic on it but not for long I suspect.

The camera got zapped when some upgrades were made, it will be functional again.

Significant open water at the Parks Highway Susitna bridge. Also lots of open water downstream of the railroad bridge on the Talkeetna.

Down here on the south end of the Susitna at Alexander Creek the River is still pretty locked up but wont be long as the upper Alexander is dumping it's ice right now. The mouth of the creek went out on the 20th, usually when the upper creek ice goes out the Su starts moving about a week later. So if it is a normal year the Su should start moving out around the 30th.

Still flowing upper creek ice in segments. Pilot friend said still solid ice on the east channel of the Su. Might be later than I thought? I'm going for the 3rd of May for the ice to start moving!

Flew the plane up river yesterday afternoon and it hasn't changed. Solid ice up the Yetna and the Susitna at the mouth of the Yetna. From the mouth of the Yetna down the ice is solid for about 3 miles to Five Fingers and then wide open and no ice for about 3 miles down to the gas line and Flathorn. Then there is about a half mile long jam and then open water all the way to the Inlet. Looks to me like we need the water to rise to get things moving.

Ice out from Deshka to the Inlet. Yentna was ice free as far as I could see. Water is way low! Better know what your doing!
