Default Your thoughts on Kenai Silver Salmon derby this september

I saw an article in the Peninsula Clarion where the Kenai Chamber of Commerce will start a Silver derby
    this September.
the last derby I remember was held in 1996.

Lots of pressure with boats parked every where.

Soon there after F&G reduced the bag limit to ONE fish using single hook artificial lure only.

I remember several guides taking their clients to Seward as who wanted to pay for the chance at ONE fish.

I believe the same will happen.

I spoke with Brian Marston area fish biologist and he felt maximum pressure was being applied without having a derby BUT no permit was needed to hold a derby.

No one knows the numbers of Silvers needed to maintain sustanable yield as these fish are not counted.

    Your thoughts ?

I think it is a terrible idea, especially after last years disaster of a silver run. The river doesn't need the extra pressure. Maybe if it was a weekend event it would be ok but not for the 2 week duration they are going to be holding it for.

Yeah, I thought the silvers haven't been that good for the last few years? How long will the derby run....all month?

Derbies typically just bring out the meat-market mentality in the masses.

    No thanks.

I wish F&G would count the return and come up with a better management plan then the one not in place. Like others have stated the last few years have been pretty poor unless you go after Oct.............
