Thread: Pistol reloading powders?

    Question Pistol reloading powders?

I am returning from being stationed in Germany and am needing to find a good all around powder for reloading pistol cartridges. I need a powder that will allow me to reloaded for the fallowing: 9mm, 38 SPC, 357 MAG, 44 MAG, and 45 APC. I was thinking Alliant Power Pistol. What are your experiences with this powder in the above Calibers?

You'll find one powder won't produce top performance for all those chamberings. For the 357 and the 44, H-110 is my favorite for full patch loads, and Unique for mild loads.

I think you could find a good powder for the auto rounds, and 38 sp, and then use H-110 for the 357 and 44.

There are several powders that will work well for the 9, 38, 45ACP, but as Paul said none of these will give magnum performance in the 357 and 44. you can however use, say, Unique or similar burn rate for all of those listed. Magnum performance is pretty much going to need one of the slower powders such as H-110, H-4227, L'ilGun or N-110. Powre pistol is actually pretty fast for a general duty powder, best suited with small charges in target loads. It can be used for full performance loads in the 9mm, however.

3N37 is probably best in the small 9mm case, and can be used in 38 and 45 ACP. Blue Dot is a top performer in 45 ACP and 38 special and can be used in light to moderate loads in the mags. Unique can be used across all these as is Blue Dot.

The best bang for the buck in pistol powders is 700X and 800X. Used by more commercial loaders than any other. The best part is Sportsman have big kegs to make your loading even cheeper.

    BW,

I was thinking of another powder when I tried to steer you away from it. Power pistol is the modern equivalent of Unique and very close to the burning rate. It actually would do for anything we use unique for. Still won't max out the magnums but a good clean powder that works well with jacketed or cast.
Worth a try, and lots of data for it.
