Got an opportunity to do an overnight at Barber cabin with my 3 kids age 6 to 11 in early August. Debating whether it makes sense to do so given my wife's a bit nervous about bears... I did the hike a few years ago to Aspen cabin in June, but didn't run into a single bear. August may be different? Bringing proper precautions, 454 casull & bear spray, any recommendations to alter plans due to bears being in higher numbers that time of year?

You'll be fine- with a group of that size you couldn't get close to a bear if you tried! Go, have fun with the family, do some fishing, you'll have a fine time, assuming the weather cooperates.
Check in with the FS beforehand just in case they have closed the trail. Would suck to drive a ways and be shut out.
