Default ~~ 2016 Haul Road Hunt Report ~~

Haven't seen this thread started yet. I'm headed up in August. Will be a solo trip I suppose because I haven't found anyone to commit. Maybe the second and last week of August. I know it's still early but has anyone been up lately with any reports?

Gotta be in the oilfields. No double lines down the Haul Road.

Last I heard, there are about 12 left ;-)

Just got back after 2 weeks. We got 2 nice bulls and a cow between three of us. Saw caribou at toolik but other than just a few there the rest were pump 2 to happy valley.

    Archerbob,
How was the road? Sloppy, dry, construction, etc....if you don't mind.
    Thanks,

Road was rough in areas, dry, lots on construction from about 50 miles out of deadhorse. Took 3 hours to get 40 miles!

2 weeks up there is impressive with early season temps. Were you guys running a generator and ice chest to keep meat cool?

And congrats on the successful trip!
I think about hunting when I wake up in the morning. I think about it all day. And I think about it at night. The only time I don't think about it is when I'm doing it. ~credit to Carl Yastrzemski~

Got back early Saturday morning. The weather was poor the first couple days, then cleared up for a couple days. Not tons of caribou around where I was hunting (Toolik to Slide Mountain) but enough to give me lots of opportunity to stalk. Mostly cows and calves -- didn't see any decent bulls. I did, however, see a herd of 100+ on the north slope of Slide Mountain. A couple cows and a calf crossed the road in front of me between Happy Valley and Pump Station 2 (but it was foggy, so who knows how many caribou were that direction.) Like ArcherBob said, construction SUCKS 30 miles south of Deadhorse. Other hunters were picking up cows between pipeline milepost 120-128... Good Luck All!

Just got back from haul road last night. I spent over 20 hours flying my cub on the North side looking for Bou. There are no large groups to be found anywhere. Very few near Deadhorse worst I have ever seen it. I stopped at Happy Vally and talked to some pilots, they said most hunters reporting zero Caribou at all the camps they set out. I than went to the South side with the same results. I think the majority of the herd went all the way to Canada this year with summer migration. They will return but for now I would recommend not driving all the way up until you see PICTURES of a lot more animals near the road. If you are going up than I would start in Deadhorse and work South.

I was just flying in the helicopter for work less than a week ago and there were 100's just north of Pump 4. Haven't seen many between Pump 2 and Deadhorse lately though.

Are they still pulling gravel and doing construction at Galbraith Lake?

Let's hope there are a few moving around the bluffs, that's where I'll be in a weeks time with my brother and a friend. I guess we really don't need a whole herd, just a group of three fat bulls on their own.

Thanks for the report. We're heading up the Ivishak at the end of next week. Hopefully a few boy will make it over there by then.
