Default Brown Bear Swimming The Kuskokwim

At 9:04 a.m. while driving downriver, videotaped this young bear swimming across the Kuskokwim River about 1.5 miles below Napakiak. It was headed to the east side of the river. Closest approach was roughly 50 feet as we idled in the water.
It looked at us as it climbed onto a sandbar and ran towards the bushes across the mud.
This is about 15 miles below Bethel.

    Default go bear, go!

    Nice!

I watched moose cow and calf swim a long choppy distance from point to point at Skilak. It was easily a 400 yard chug. I was so impressed I almost saluted.

I'm sure the pictures don't do the expierence justice.

In the 70's off Kodiak we flew over a brown bear swimming. He was 25 miles off shore. Don't know where he was going or if he made it but it does make you wonder. Maybe he heard about the girls in Japan! Jim

I watched a brown this spring chase a cow and calf moose into the Aniak, He grabbed the calf and drug it ashore, killed it and pulled it into the brush before I caould get a picture. I saw him 2 more times through the summer chasing moose along the river.
