Thread: good reasonable taxidermist?

    Default good reasonable taxidermist?

I'm looking for a taxidermist who can do nice Red Stag shoulder mounts. Do you have experience with a good and fair taxidermist in Anchorage or the Valley? I've had horrible luck twice.

I have had a couple animals done by Yukon Grubaugh(sp) at Tall Tales Taxidermy with good results. One of those animals was a repair job from another taxidermist when I tried to go inexpensive. I know others who have used him without complaint as well. I have a goat with him currently. It has taken longer than usual but that is because when he got the hide back from the tannery, he felt that they had not done a good enough job combing it out so he sent it back as it wasn't up to his standard. I appreciate that.

I have multiple bear rugs, moose antlers done by him. he recently did mine and my daughter's mule deer shoulder mounts....I call him my personal taxidermist cause he is the only one I will let touch my animals. I sent the wife's bear to a place in the valley and when we got it back I was greatly disappointed with the work. so choose....but choose wisely!

I second Yukon at Tall Tales (East Anchorage). While i have never taken him anything for a shoulder mount, he has done a couple bear rugs for me. Quality work. I wouldn't hesitate to take anything else to him at this point. Two buddies of mine - one of them was who referred me to Yukon originally - use him exclusively. I would say that his prices may be a sliver higher than average, but worth it, in my opinion.

Another vote for Mike Frazier at Fur and Feather. He is one nice guy, always answers his phone (unless he's out of town), gets things done on a reasonable timetable, very nice quality work. A good taxi is hard to find.

Good reputations mentioned already, fosters in wasilla, trophy tanning and taxidermy. Any taxidermy in ak is spendy.
Had a deer shoulder mount done for 450 bucks once. About half of what most guys are. Regretted it. But still probabanly wouldn't have paid 800 bucks for a deer mount. Cheaper to have it done in the states and shipped up.

Hate to have to agree with Jake (jk) on endorsing Foster's. Especially for the Stag. Not allot of those being mounted up here and you want somebody who has done allot of them before and has done his homework on what they should look like. As always you get what you pay for, especially in Taxidermy.

I'll second that about Juli at Alaska Wildlife Rugs and Taxidermy! She did my ram this year and it turned out fantastic.......not to mention she had it back to me before Christmas. It's also my understanding that she was trained by Foster. I think her name is JuliW on here.
