    Default Tors trail campground

Hoping to head there this coming weekend. It's not gated in the off-season is it? (Last time I visited it wasn't). If it's open, is there much risk of it being filled up by friday mid-evening?

Give DNR a call (907-451-2705), the Parks folks will know. If it's closed, there's plenty of little "roads" in that general area that lead to gravel bars to camp. All the trails are closed to ATV's now so maybe human traffic will be a little lighter?

I live out CHSR and have been up in the rec area fishing most days the past few weeks, and the tourist/towny traffic has really picked up. The campgrounds do not appear to be anywhere close to full (they're definitely open), however, but you're absolutely right that there are tons of pullouts where you can camp for free. A few even have outhouses. I'm not sure I'd camp on the gravel bars - the water has been high-ish and it's supposed to rain this weekend. I had a friend who had to abandon his camper on a gravel bar for over a week waiting for the water to come down after he'd decided it was okay to stay put through a downpour.
