Thread: LED lights cutting out VHF radio

Default LED lights cutting out VHF radio

Decided yesterday to replace the cabin/cockpit ceiling bulbs with LEDs to save power on the boat. I was at my house listening to the marine forecast on the VHF, coming through loud and clear, then when I turned on either of the two LEDs closest to the radio (maybe 3-4 feet away), the radio went silent until I turned the LED back off. Turning on any of the LEDs further away from the radio caused static, but I could still hear and understand the radio. I read a little online about some interferences that LEDs can cause, but wondered if anyone else here has had this problem on their boat and if there was a fix other than putting the old bulbs back in.

Lots of folks are finding out that LED's are causing all kinds of problems for radios. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do. Some folks are having limited success using RF filters on the radio or installing grounded shielding around the LED itself. Until the FCC steps in and makes the manufacturers design "clean" RFI LED's, there isn't a lot you can do.

There are LEDs already on the market that are certified to not cause RF issues

All led's on our boat, including 32' of strand lights, light bar on front and deck. No issues.
Something is amiss in your application.

This was the fix for me. "Zero RF Emission" Dr. LED light from West Marine as opposed to an LED from Batteries Plus. No interference. Problem solved.
