Default When do morels come out?

Hey all. We live in Seward and are looking to do some morel hunting this spring. I already know what to look for and where I am guessing they might be, but I was just curious when do they tend to emerge? Haven't ever tried on the Kenai pen so wasn't sure.

    Thanks

Generally mid-May to mid-June is morel season. Once things are reasonably warm you should go looking 2-3 days after a solid rainfall. In a dry spring it can be difficult, though.

We start keeping an eye out when the willow leaves are the size of mouse ears. Sunny days after a rain will get them coming.
Look on south facing slopes, but flat ground will produce also. Depressions seem to hold some. Fire burned areas can be great.

Good luck and let us know where you find them at.

The fire areas are the best places to look for them and they tend to come out a bit earlier than other places. This year they might be out a couple of weeks earlier because of the temps. However that being said, I've been watching when the leaves come out on the trees here in the interior for several years and it never strays regardless of the weather, they still pop out between the 10th and the 20th of May (between the 13-16 most times) But as Bullbuster says look in the burned spots first.

Has anyone been finding any morels yet down in Southcentral area? I might have to look around this weekend.

Now that we received rain, a few days of warmth should bring them out. This weekend might be a good time to do so.

Found 60 in your yard!? I'm jealous! I'm lucky if I find that many in a whole day! I'm headed down to the Kenai peninsula this weekend and want to do a little looking around between projects. I bet up in willow area in the burn would be good. They are definitely my favorite shroom. I sure hope I'm not too early this weekend but I think I might be by a week or so.

I plan on heading down to my spots on the peninsula this coming Friday. Fingers crossed. Lows in the 40s, and highs in the 60s + rain = Morels.

I did not make it down this weekend (the rest of my crew did not like the idea of hiking around in the woods in the rain). I will be headed down this coming weekend though (rain or shine)!

Picked up a few on a random hike last weekend. This weeks rain and now unplanned blue skies should make for a great long weekend.
