    Default Commercial Shrimping Location

Does anybody know where the Commercial Shrimping Location is going to be this year, and if it has that big of an impact on personal use shrimping? I was trying to get to Eaglek Bay, or Unakwik Inlet for the opener and wanted to know if the comm guys would be up that way? That being said would the opener really get effected by that?

If I remember correctly, that will be the area being targeted this year. It also includes Port Wells.

Whoops! You're correct, sir. Unakwik is in Area 1, and Port Wells is in Area 2. Thanks for the correction.

Great for the commercial gents, sad for us. This will be my first year back out in the sound shrimping after selling our Seasport few years back. Sure do love Unakwik--such a cool area and always proved great shrimping for us--hard not to find them.

Can easily imagine it being a little crowded at the moraine for the opener.

So will that area extend through Eaglek?

Yes. Area 1 is huge. See page 32 of this link http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/fedaidpdfs/sp15-03.pdf. There is a better link to an area map, but I didn't find it fast.

Correct, since they fished Area 3 last year, they will be in Area 1 this year.

Do they really pose that big of impact to personal shrimping? I know the salmon fish guys will cut your bouys, but why would a comm shrimper do that? Is there really that many who would go up Unakwik Bay?

I would bet all the commercial shrimpers will be up in Unakwik for the opener. They target the productive areas just like the rec guys. After the first open period Unakwik sub area will be closed to commercial.

I dont recall the boat numbers but they have an allocation of around 45k pounds. Sporties get 55k pounds or so. All from memory from attending the adfg weekly talks a couple years ago so don't jump me if i am off on the numbers some.

Seems to me there are only a dozen or so. Usually starts off with everyone taking part and later in the season it drops down to just a couple boats as others move to salmon fishing.

there is way more rec gear being fished than the piddly number of comm boats fishing shrimp. Like JR2 sez after the 1st couple of fishing periods most will quit.

average of 2000 rec permits issue the last few years vs. maybe 4-6 comm boats that fish the entire season.

No worries. We will overharvest and ruin the fishery. I argued a little that our method of sustainable management is only very shortly maintained as sustainable. Adfg figures that if we can kill 110-130k pounds of shrimp every year then we are good. I have seen (and helped) areas have less and less shrimp in them.

These numbers dont count the trawl shrimperies in the sound.
