Default Donating flights to charity auctions as a private pilot?

Whenever I see requests for items to be donated for auction (for causes I support), I always wonder about the legality of donating a flight as a private pilot. I've always assumed that it wouldn't be legal as it might fall under commercial regulations, but I'm not certain on that. Of course there are also liability issues to be concerned with as well. That aside, does anyone have any insight on whether such a donation would be legal? If the private pilot paid for the fuel themselves and did not accept any compensation, but rather all compensation went to the charitable cause in question...legal? No?

AOPA has a good online overview on charity flight operations.

Excellent - thank you. Part (e) seems to be a bit of a pain in the rear, but that answers my question.
