    Default Another duck ID...

I think I know my ducks quite well. This one has me stumped. Not a great pic but will post some better ones in the am. Can't find it yet in any of the duck id sites.
Diving duck. Chestnut brown chest. White head with just a few dark (brown/black?) feathers on crown of head. Beautiful duck taken at kasilof estuary (along w one hen mallard) Monday eve.
Nova is glad to see my shooting has improved too. Two shots fired, 2 ducks in hand.

It may be a hen, or a young male. Long-tails have some of the most variable plumage of all sea ducks, and they don't get full adult plumage until their second year (unlike dabblers, which molt into breeding plumage by October/Nov the year they hatch out). Google some photos of hen long-tailed ducks and you can see how variable they can be.

Thanks guys. Saw the Oldsquaw in the book but didn't look like what I saw. I'll review again.
Sure is a pretty duck, tho. I don't ever hunt the seaducks.

That duck does NOT have a politically correct name. Maybe "Geriatric-First'nation-of female persuasion".

They do actually have a politically correct name, the name was officially changed to long tailed duck a few years back. But a lot of us who've been hunting ducks for a long time still refer to them as oldsquaws. They have a really cool sounding call too.

I thought someone would say again, "Why would you shoot a duck you couldn't ID?" And I woulda had to say cuz I'm gonna eat it, either way.
Im sorta surprised it's not another 'Melanistic Mutant Duck" of some kind. Been a lot of weird birds getting killed around me this year.
