Default I have a new world record!!

Well, it took almost three months, but the thornyhead rockfish I caught back in July was certified by IGFA as a new world record!!

... ironically, the state of Alaska cannot give any recognition for the catch, because the minimum size for a rockfish under their program is 18 pounds, and this one was 8lb 4oz.

Well, if anyone tries to follow and potlick me, they'd better have at least 1,500 feet of braid on their reel ... it's a LOOOOOONG way to the bottom!

Congratulations - that's a nice fish. I've seen a few larger thornyheads than that come up on commercial longline gear, so you may well have some future competition for your record as more people get into deep-drop methods of rod and reel fishing. Good luck.

You're probably correct. The references I've read say that commercial catches sometimes weigh up to 20#.

But, most of the deep drop fishermen I know of use electric reels, which don't count for world record status with IGFA.
