Thread: Is this Possible?

    Default Is this Possible?

I was reading an ad for a 20' V hull boat. This general information was provided: Volvo Penta 4 cylinder 126hp motor. Brand new 175 out drive. Like new 20hp Honda high thrust motor with own fuel and battery. This boat cruises at 20 knots, 2gal/hr, 11mi to gal, 91octain, over 250 miles cruising range.

Seems impossible to me that a 126 hp anything could only burn only 2 gph at cruise, but I don't know anything about this type of power plant. What do you guys think

Sounds like crazy talk to me, but pretty much the norm. Seems that most ads say their boats effiecency is usually twice as good as real world numbers

Well, it is a craigslist private owner boat ad. Seemed like a pretty cool boat as far as satisfying my low end needs go. Performance numbers sounded too good to be true....and Potbuilder has me scared to death of outdrives, anyway...lol. Of course, my outboard is in the hospital during all this good fishing. At this point, I wouldn't care what turned the prop was if it would just work for awhile....

tell the guy you'll buy the boat if he takes you out and proves the numbers to ya. I looked for a volvo 175 drive and can't find it. Maybe its a 275 drive so thats the model before the 280 and those are dinosaurs ! Even found this chart on volvo drives

I'd say its a bunch of old junk. I just wonder why the topbox says SP on it instead of 275 ?? Cobbled together from a few drives maybe ?? I think spend my money for a new outboard.

    found this https://youtu.be/ezOnm0QqDsU
    found this also https://youtu.be/ezOnm0QqDsU

looks like it might be a 275 ???

I'd like to find one of these someday http://api.viglink.com/api/click?for...p-Lobster.aspx
this one is a bit on the high priced side but the hulls and tops are perfectly proportioned.

Well, I'm no mechanic, so that's why its in the shop. Trolled for several hours with no issues. Then ran several miles at cruise to my anchorage with no issues. Next start, got a check engine light...surges at low rpm and wouldn't go over 3k tops and ran rough throughout the available power band. There were a couple spots where it seemed to run half way smooth, but generally rough, and I had to fiddle with the "sweet spots" from time to time. It would die now and then, but would restart easily...just run rough. When I finally limped into Whittier I trolled around the sheet pile and got a few nice silvers...so not a total loss. From what I've googled, it sounds like a fuel problem, but I have a new Racor fuel filter this year..no water in it and use gas station fuel that I run through a Mr. Funnel. Plugs looked good..tell tale has normal volume...oil is clean... Thankful I didn't need a tow$$.

My Honda 50 uses more than 2gph on a 16' hewes river runner, no way that inboard is more efficient on a much heavier boat!

Never heard of the builder but there a quite a few backyard builders down there. Those Virgina hulls in that size are made to fish in shallow water and although they have a sharp entry the rest is pretty flat and i'd bet it would pound your teeth out in some slop but with that 3-53(no longer made)you won't have to worry about much pounding cause its a 8-10 knot boat. Oh one other thing get a good set of ear muffs you'll need it with those 53 series GM's. Looks well put together but in my opinion not the greatest hull style for this part of the world.

Since I already have one that will pound my teeth out in the slop, I guess I'm all set up....
