Default Evinrude 88 spl jet to prop swap

I am asking as the helper for this evinrude motor and my knowledge is limited so here we go.

    Model # E88mslenb

Mid 90's 88 evinrude spl with a jet currently on it. trying to carry a heavier load into moose camp this year we decide to swap to a prop lower unit. we find two seperate lower units that mount up perfectly except that the shaft is exactly one inch shorter then the jet unit shaft. The prop lower units gears still grab but only by about a quarter inch. is there something we are missing? called mining and diving with no luck, and will be taking it out to burkeshore in hopes they know the older motor. any insight would be great.

    Thanks!
