Default Big Bulls Derby & Raffle

It took several years of work to change the law but Alaska now has a Derby for the Moose Hunters. The Derby is sponsored by the UAF Rifle Team and the Tanana Valley Sportsman's Association. This fall will be round 1 and with a lot of work it is coming together - in addition to prizes for the biggest bulls it is a raffle with lots of prizes. Hopefully the raffle portion will be of interest even to those not hunting moose.

Please take a look at the Facebook page and the web site for all the information:
    https://www.facebook.com/Bigbullderby
    http://www.bigbullderby.com/

All proceeds will go to the UAF Rifle Team and TVSA, in turn they both provide a lot of support for the youth shooting sports as well as promoting and preserving our hunting heritage. Links to both of those web sites are listed on the Facebook page as well.

Take a look and help us spread the word - we could really use the help getting this off the ground and growing.

If anyone has any pictures of their "Big Bull" they would like to share for use in our Facebook album that would be help full. Any picture with women and younger hunters would be a plus as well. A great album of all the success stories will hopefully garner more interest and get folks looking. You can either share them here and I will copy them or post them on the Facebook page and I will move to the "Big Bulls" Album.

For those that may not know - UAF Rifle Competes in NCAA Division 1 and holds 10 NCAA National Championships. UAF Rifle Alumni have and are currently competing at the Olympic level and have brought home numerous medals in both Men' and women's events. Certainly well worth the support!

    From your website:

Our measuring instruments are coming together - these will all be the same device and will have a extremely accurate laser for taking the measurements - no room for questions on this one! So far we know we will have the following measuring stations:

Tanana Valley Sportsman's Association in Fairbanks
Caribou Ridge Taxidermy in North Pole
Granite View Sports in Delta Junction
    3 Bears Alaska in Tok
    McKinley Polaris in Healy

Derby tickets will be sold at all of those locations plus:
    Sortsman's Warehouse in Fairbanks
    Frontier Outfitters in Fairbanks

Is this a contest and raffle ONLY for people north of Healy? Can't you find someplace in the Valley, Anchorage, and on the Peninsula to sell raffle tickets and/or measure moose antlers?? Will you be selling raffle tickets online?

Hello CapnMike - Yes - the ultimate goal will be to have a statewide derby with a lot more measuring stations. With that said we had to start somewhere and assure we can get this up and running in year one. We have a very limited amount of all volunteer labor trying to push this forward. So for this year this will be all the measuring stations. Healy is pretty close to the valley for those that have a big one already spotted and we certainly see a lot of hunters from south of the ranges in the interior come hunting season so hopefully we will get some participation from that part of the state.

We certainly want to include the whole state at least in the raffle - Those in charge of making sense of the state gaming laws are actively pursuing what we can do for ticket sales when it comes to long distance. First and foremost is to assure everything stays within the gaming laws. Please keep an eye on the Facebook page or our web site - we will keep it up to date as quick as we have more developments.

    Thanks for the question.

Sounds great. Being a UAF alumni, I look forward to buying some raffle tickets. Maybe, somewhere down the line, you'll be able to do this for all the big game species. A great way to fund some great programs.

I attended the weekly meeting last night and it appears we will be able to sell raffle tickets over the phone with a credit card - They are getting a phone line set up and the other banking needs taken care of. The preliminary prize list for the raffle portion will be out this week as the tickets go on sale. Lots more information is updated on the previous links.
