    Default Best date 2016 to try for reds in the Kenai.

    Hi Guys(and gals);

    Last year I brought my son up fishing for Reds- We were early for the reds. We did do OK for Halibut, Got some clams, and caught 1 Red in Soldotna. Everyone on here was real helpful(THANK YOU!)

    Last year we heard that the reason we didn't see that many was the commercial fishing, the dip netters, blah, blah, blah. We were just early-end of story. We just like coming up because we love Alaska.

    Now- knowing that the reds(and other salmon) like coming in with the tides-So looking at when the full moon is in the middle of July/late in July is a good bet?

    Or are we smarter trying for the more neutral tides for a Halibut charter and chances on the reds?

    Thanks for all input-you guys know better than us flatlanders!!!

    I would pick my dates based on favorable halibut tides so you can enjoy that much more. Anytime between July 15th and 30th the river will be full of reds regardless of tides. You may have to move up or down river to hit them, but there will certainly be plenty of reds available. My birthday is the 18th. The big slug usually hits the river 2-3 days one side or the other of my B day.

    My highly sophisticated educated guess would be July 19th next year.

    The 15th to the end of the month would be the window I choose.

    July 25th. If they are early fish them high, if late fish them low.

    This is exactly what I tell my guests and I've never had trouble getting them on fish. The way halibut fishing is going I'm amazed you guys still pay for charters, the captains I know expect a one a day limit next year, don't know how realistic that is.
