AREA CLOSED TO SPORT FISHING EXPANDED BELOW LITTLE SUSITNA WEIR
Sport fishing within 2,000 feet immediately downstream, and 300 feet upstream, of the Alaska Department of Fish and Gameís fish counting weir on the Little Susitna River at river mile 32.5 is closed to all sport fishing beginning 6:00 a.m., Friday, May 29. Regulatory markers identify the lower and upper boundaries of the closed area.
Extending the closure below the weir to 2,000 feet is necessary to protect salmon that can become concentrated and more vulnerable to the fishery while seeking passage through the departmentís weir. Any increase in catch rates within this area due to operation of the weir could reduce the intended benefits of emergency orders currently in effect to achieve the king salmon escapement goal.
