    Default Shrimp Gear Review

Well, last summer we lost all 5 of our Potbuilder pots in Passage Canal. So, I picked up some of that fancy no muss lead line and poly rope from Steve and the wife forced me to switch over to the round pots from Donalsons this time.

Well everyone knows the square pots take up space in the boat. The round ones sure stack up nice. But.... They are a pain to get set up before the drop. I had to add some heavy chain to one edge to keep them from kiting on the way down. They sure pull heavy too. I think it's the design of them and I even put the toggle on a 1/3 of the attached pot rope too to make them come up at sort of an angle. Once we get them in the boat, boy what a mess. They take up so much space when emptying out the shrimp. The square ones stack easily. Rebaiting the round ones is a pain too. Steves are so much easier to work when pulling and dropping.

Catch rates were about the same as our previous years with Steves pots. This weekend we did some test drops with BKmail who has Steves pots and we still came up with about the same numbers.

So, I like the smaller storage footprint of the round pots, but Steve's pot sure are more user friendly while on the boat. Regretting the round ones? Yeah somewhat, but I'll keep them until someone else decides they want these worse than I do like my last set.

Sure do like the white lead line Steve sells too. That stuff is great.

We used old bait on our first go this year...complete failure. 5 pots, 6 hour soak = 3 shrimp.

    It's the Opsrey Braided sinkline.

We always have left over bait and it works well for us. i'm sure pouring in some herring oil wouldn't hurt though.

i've always used my old bait, seemed to work fine, even if it got wet and molded it still caught bugs. Flip the bucket over to let the oil settle back through the pellets after setting all winter.

Agree, I used year old moldy bait and it caught tons of bugs...course I need to get some more!
I used up 2 gallons of bait this weekend plus a pig liver, 5lbs of pig fat, and a dozen small cod. Worked great!!

Leftovers from butchering a hog two weeks ago. Rather than toss it I stuck 'em in the trap.....can't argue with the results!

AGREE COMPLETELY, AWESOME WEEKEND ON THE WATER!!

    Sorry about the hijack Rob.

Steve, I am going to modify my traps by cutting on of my sides to make it a 2 part door. This will allow me to dump the bugs into a bucket much easier when I stand the trap upright on one corner vs. having the entire on side open. I'm thinking cut one door into a 1/3rd so it will only open leaving the other 2/3rds closed thus concentrating the bugs into one corner to dump them.
    Any thoughts?

Can't take credit....Rob came up with idea but it seems pretty solid!

It might work but what are going do to fix all the "legs" you'll have after you cut the wire ?? Just bring the pots over and we'll do something.

I love how you can store that puller in the front corner. Great idea
