    Default using campgrounds off-season

When I first got up here 8 years ago it was no problem to go into a campground in december and spend the night, as long as you could handle it not being plowed and there was no one around. I haven't been paying attention in recent years, is it still like that? I'd like to take the camper down to Williwaw near Portage for the weekend, but I don't want to waste the trip if it's going to be gated. It's a forest service campground... but then so is Porcupine in Hope, which I've used in december before no problem.

I never been gated out of a BLM or State campground.. heck, I use one in particular more in the off season than in the summer.

Hope is open and just saw that Bertha Creek just opened. Not sure about Willawaw. Just spent the wet weekend at Skilak. Not another soul there

I saw a camper parked at one of the gravel pits/ponds in Portage on Friday night. Even if the campground itself is closed, there are other options up that way, it seems.

Plenty of campers last weekend along the road to portage at each of the pull outs.
Don't recall any locked gates along the way.

State locks up everything near where I live every fall and doesn't open it up until the first tourists are due. We (residents) must be the red headed step child.

i feel the same. it would be nice to use a few of these facility's in the shoulder season when they are not packed with tourists. but i guess we couldn't have that.

Most State campgrounds can be used in the winter. You just have to hoof it into them. And know the facilities are locked.
