Just a quick update about the highway conditions and such. They plowed the highway from Cantwell to the Maclaren River last week. They have shut down the Susitna River Bridge as of today. The bridge will not be crossable for the next 2 to 3 weeks, up to May 15th, depending upon how the work goes. They are plowing from the Paxson side, and as of 2 days ago they were at MP 14.
Spring bears are slow to come out. I have spotted 2 tracks so far. I'm guessing anytime they will be out in pretty good numbers. There was a lot of them around last fall before sleepy time.
It is my understanding that brown bear baiting will be legal as of spring of 2016, so I'm excited about that prospect! I'll be putting my stand out again this year to continue my conditioning of the bears in anticipation of it becoming legal!
We are still doing our spring bear hunters special at $50 per night, per person, all meals included. If your planning on coming out, you'll have to be inventive on how to get out here. A lot of cross country riding will be required at this point. Snow is still deep and excellent in the mountains, so getting around after the bears should be still good, especially in the morning via snow machine.
Good luck to all this spring!
