    Default Denali Highway/Spring Bear/Road conditions 4/17/15

Just a quick update about the highway conditions and such. They plowed the highway from Cantwell to the Maclaren River last week. They have shut down the Susitna River Bridge as of today. The bridge will not be crossable for the next 2 to 3 weeks, up to May 15th, depending upon how the work goes. They are plowing from the Paxson side, and as of 2 days ago they were at MP 14.
Spring bears are slow to come out. I have spotted 2 tracks so far. I'm guessing anytime they will be out in pretty good numbers. There was a lot of them around last fall before sleepy time.
It is my understanding that brown bear baiting will be legal as of spring of 2016, so I'm excited about that prospect! I'll be putting my stand out again this year to continue my conditioning of the bears in anticipation of it becoming legal!
We are still doing our spring bear hunters special at $50 per night, per person, all meals included. If your planning on coming out, you'll have to be inventive on how to get out here. A lot of cross country riding will be required at this point. Snow is still deep and excellent in the mountains, so getting around after the bears should be still good, especially in the morning via snow machine.

Good luck to all this spring!

Talked to a guy at work that he and a buddy went out through last Tuesday, and they said they didn't even see a track. Other than what denalihunter said about the two tracks, almost his explanation word for word.

One of the few good things south central had going for it was the bear hunting, no matter how many bears we kill the moose and caribou hunting ain't gonna be awesome. Still to many people.

A buddy and I put on 230 miles in the AK Range over the last 3 days and nary a track, den, or bear sighting. We couldn't go where we wanted to go on Sunday due to rotten snow. Good luck

I take it that would have been where you killed that beauty in your avatar a couple years ago...???

That bear has always really impressed me...!!!....

Thanks. Actually, we made it to that location, but we could not make it up another valley where we scored a bigger bear that same year. It did not freeze on Sunday night so the snow was really rotten on Sunday's ride. We could barely get off of old snowmachine tracks w/o major effort.

One bear was harvested in the Clearwaters so far. Was 8 foot, about a week ago. The bridge is closed now for a couple of weeks. Hopefully plow trucks from Paxson will connect it up so I can come and go as needed.

Is the river still frozen, or has it begun to open up? I was wondering if we would be able to get across on snowmachines and Argo's.

    Jerod,
River is opening up on the East side about 4 feet. You can probably run upriver and find a spot. But that won't last long. Found out the plows from Paxson will be connecting the plowing from this side probably on Wednesday, so you'll be able to drive right in from Paxson. Good hunting the entire distance, so it won't be a waste of time. Looking forward to seeing you out here!

    Thanks!

Looks like some nice weather up there right now. Your webcam showed 80 degrees! Have you been seeing any more sign? We're planning to the highway on Thursday for the weekend.

Does anyone know if the bridge has opened yet? If not, a decent time frame when it will open back up? Thanks
