Default What is this feature on the hayflats?

Every time I look at aerial photos of the hayflats and see this feature I wonder what the hell it is. I figured you guys would know best. Who made it and what purpose did or does it still serve? It's about one mile south of the Rabbit Slough ramp and about a tenth of a mile west of the Glenn. Maybe this has come up before, but I searched the forum with no luck.

Edit: In before aliens/crop circles/manmade moose maze.

They are from nesting beds created by DU some time ago, more across the highway from those.

Aha! I figured they were for a wetland study or something along those lines, but that makes more sense considering the refuge status.

I didn't even notice the ones on the east side of the highway until you mentioned it. That's great!

    Thanks for satisfying my curiosity.

It is the wetlands mitigation project for expanding the highway from two lanes to the current divided four lanes back in ancient times (1990?). It was designed or suggested by DU and constructed by the construction company expanding the highway. DU used to have a one page write up on it on their website but I can no longer find a link to it. As noted by others the intent was to improve nesting habitat.
