    Default ice

Has anybody either landed on or seen a plane on Figure 8 lake recently. How is the ice?

A friend of mine landed there a week ago on wheels. A week ago I landed on wheels on three lakes to the south of AnchorAge on wheels. Like landing on a giant ice rink.

I live out on Alexander and we have running water down by the mouth. Temps have been averaging around 50 degrees for a high for the last week. Only a couple of nights went below freezing. We had a high of 58 two daysc ago. I would err on the side of caution myself.

If this trend continues the ice will be out much sooner this year. I removed my plane from the ice last week. Typically I wait until the first week in April.

Beluga Lake in Homer is pretty much all open WATER as of yesterday. But it does receive salt water up under the ice during high tides. Or whenever my plane is in the lake.

Did my solo cross country today Yesterday flew to Seymore Lake Fly-In in Wasilla, ICe seemed solid, reported to be over 2 feet thick. Today flew up to Talkeetna, saw some water on ice, fair number of open streams, some rotten edges and some star pattern rotten areas starting. Also Willow strip is getting some nasty potholes in the packed snow on the runway. Evaluate lakes and snow covered runways carefully.

Landed on Figure 8 and tried fishing today. Still 24 inches of good ice. Fishing extremely slow.
