    Default Johnson Lower Unit Question...

I have a Johnson 175 HP carburetted 25" shaft manufactured 05/04. I have 199 hours on the motor.

I dropped the gearcase to replace the waterpump and find there is quite a bit of play in the driveshaft. If I were to hold it forward and move it to the rear, I am guessing 1/2" of movement. Pulling it up, I see about 0.030" movement. I am unfamiliar with OB lowers, and need to know if this is normal? This is the first time the lower has been off. I have replaced the gearcase lube every season, once at the beginning and again roughly towards the latter part, usually around the end of July.

I would have thought lowers would last longer than this.

Is there a reputable Johnson specialist in Anchorage that could turn this around quickly if it is bad?

    Thanks.

Thanks, I'll call'em in the morning. Not looking forward to Goldstreak costs, but what the hey, it's only money.
