Default Any word on Kodiak deer herds..

Has anyone heard how the deer herds survived the winter on Kodiak? Was the winter kill as bad a speculation?

Winter hardest on Kodiak Island deer

Article Last Updated: 05/18/2007 03:12:07 PM AKDT

This season's harsh winter conditions may have contributed to the deaths of as many as 10, 000 Sitka black-tailed on Kodiak Island Archipelago this year. This review is according to the Alaska Department Fish and Game.
Area game biologist Larry Van Daele in Kodiak says up to 8,000 may have perished in the north end of the island chain alone. While the total may seem staggering, it does not come close to the 1998-99 winter when up to 75,000 perished, Van Daele says.

    Ak Powder,
Thanks for the link and good luck on that hunt. Be sure to seal your tent well- I hear bacon grease works good

I'm actually gonna be living in the Kitoi Bay Hatchery, hot showers, hot meals and Afognak Island for $80 having your girlfriend gone at a hatchery does have its perks I guess

POW would be a better choice for deer. Nice deer and big bears as well.

i talked with the bios down there and it wasn't as bad as anticipated, young bucks will be gone and last year fawns might be hurtin' as well, any buck with decent gear on his head should still be around, but if its not as bad as 99 by a long shot then the hunting should still be great. as long as you know how to hunt deer there, before there was so many you could limit out without having a clue....
