Thread: Whitefish???

    Default Whitefish???

Not sure where to post this question. Thought about icefishing forum, bowhunting forum, dipnetting forum and possibly others. What I'm wondering about is bowfishing or spearing for whitefish in Southcentral Alaska. I've read through the regs and I know that there are some places in Alaska that you can spear or bowfish for whitefish. What I don't know is if it is allowed anywhere in Southcentral AK. Does anyone know if it is allowed in any creeks or rivers in Southcentral AK? And if so, where can I find the regulations on it? I would love to get some whitefish for bait. I know of some places in Southcentral where you can find whitefish, but not sure if it's legal to fish for them and what methods are allowed. Thanks.

I don't know any rivers in SC, but I have speared forwhitefish, tons of fun! We spear then in the late fall (October) when they comeup to spawn. I think you should talk to fish and game and see where the whitefish spawn, then look at if you can spear those locations. (From what I've seenmost places close to town are closed but once you get 100+ miles out of town thanits fair game but you should not take my word for it check the regs)

Unfortunately, spearing is only allowed for pike in Southcentral. Although, they are open for rod and reel fishing anywhere that's open to fishing. In Southcentral there is no limit since they fall under "other finfish".

The only whitefish spear fishery I'm aware of in the state is on the Chatanika River, north of Fairbanks.

here are some of the Regulations:

"Whitefish (excluding sheefish) may be taken by spear or bow and arrow
September 1ľApril 30 and may be speared the entire year only by persons completely submerged, excluding the Chatanika River drainage."

    get you wet suit together!

(note this was for the Tanana river drainages not statewide)
