Default 96 Polaris Indy 500 chain case and reverse

So I'm having some slight issues with my sled not wanting to shift into reverse/ forward right away. Sometimes I have open the cowling and push on the cable/ gear to make it shift. Anyone have any ideas? And is it ok to use ATF in place of chain case lube?

if it goes into and out of gear with manipulating the linkage, it sounds like an linkage adjustment is needed. Lots of folks use ATF for chain case oil, some people use it when they have a seal leak. Seems to swell the seal a bit and stop a leak.......
