Default wooly sport jet stomp gate "springs" question! oh oh!

hi guys..went out yesterday to look at the boat and I noticed the 2 springs that keep the gate up were broken?..the 2 springs appear to
have been cut at the same spot(1/2 inch dif)...now I know when I cleaned up the boat I washed that area with the hose and played with the gate so it had to have happened in storage?...we just when through a large temperature change in the last 2-3 weeks(-29c to +8 c)..would that do it, perhaps I damaged one on the river and it decided to "let loose" later?

..also, do all the parts appear to be in place on the jet?..thinking maybe someone tampered with it?

last but not least--is it hard to replace these two springs?

    thanks for any help!! larry

that string thing was a piece of seaweed and the white stuff is frost

I would like to complement you on the close-up in focus pictures. It is so frustrating for someone to post a picture so small you can't see anything.

About $14.50 each at http://pacificpowertraininc.com/prod.../stomp-grates/ I loose one about every two years, so buy 3-4 at a time.
There seems to be no explanation as to when or why they break.

I know I was not asked...If it takes two springs to hold up the engine and one breaks I don't see how a single spring will do the job or last very long.

MacGyver: One spring will hold the bucket almost but not quite up.
bcriverhunter: Those are the ones, I see they have raised the price from last year.
Just to be sure you could call them but if I remember they use the same spring for all their grates.

I use door springs now. Broke the grate springs three times and then went to the hardware store and bought some coil door springs. Drilled some new holes installed and six years later still on the same springs.

in ten years i have never lost a spring or had to replace one. Weather swings should have no effect on the springs or the stomp grate

I inspected some that broke and could see where the wire was warn thin from rubbing on the shaft. Some have broken where there is a sharp bend in the wire. Probably a function of use and luck.

Default wooly sport jet stomp gate "springs" question! oh oh!

When the springs on mine broke I replaced with springs from the hardware store. I also mounted them so they were not around the guide rod. After that the stomp grate operated silently, instead of the awful noise it made before. 300 hours on the hardware store springs, originals didn't last 50.

Thanks for the post. My wooly jet boat will be 12 next spring and I have yet to break a spring. It's not from lack of trying I'm sure. This has made me think I'll get a couple to carry for next summer, I'm probably over due.
