    Default Frozen Prince William Sound...

I headed out to Whittier this morning with the hope of finding a few sea ducks, but found Passage Canal frozen over with 1/4" to 1/2" of ice. My buddy and I weren't digging the conditionIs, so we headed back home after idling through the ice and fog for 45 min. However, I am curious as to how far out it was frozen. Did anyone else head out this morning? Has anyone ever seen the ocean freeze over at Whittier? If so, is this common?

I'm in and out of Whittier often. With the temperature swings we are experiencing, it happens quite a bit. Warm during the day and cold at night. When the wind picks up, the ice will break up and head out or in depending on the wind direction. Hope for a blow (then calm for safety's sake) and temps to stay below freezing. It's pretty much all the frozen fresh water still flowing out of Billings creek.

The NOAA Bouy off Pigot is showing a water temp of 40. The air temps in Whittier have been above 32. How could there be 1/2 "
    of ice in Passage???

There was ice in there today. When I got in at 1230 it was solid from the rookery all the way in. On my way out at 1315, the wind picked up 15 knots from the ESE, and was opening it up nicely, and pushing it to the north. I won't be back there until Thursday. The wind and rain should open up the water.

Temp was in the teens when we got through the tunnel. Couldn't believe it was froze. Should have taken some pictures.

We launched Saturday morning. Slick ramp. Iced over harbor and solid ice until we were well into port wells. It sucked. A buddy of mine said it was even worse last night but it was pretty clear when we came back in this afternoon.

Culross was also frozen yesterday coming through. Last mile to Whittier harbor was frozen with over half inch of ice....no fun idling along at 1 knot crushing ice under the hull.

Wow. Just goes to show you that one never knows what is going to be around the next point (or tunnel) in Alaska.... Want to get the new boat out when she gets here in the next couple of weeks but wasn't planning on doing any Ice Breaker activiities on the maiden run... Thanks for the update.
