A new non-profit organization has been formed to provide awareness for Walrus Island Sanctuary, which is seven islands in Bristol Bay. This is the first wildlife sanctuary formed in Alaska and is the home of the largest haul out of Pacific walrus. The island also boasts a large population of Arctic Fox and many species of birds. In order to cut funding, the Walrus Island Sanctuary is going to lose the support staff crew that has been there for 39 years. This staff provides the Round Island walrus count, assists visitors, and maintains the trails. Remote camping by permit has been allowed, and it is not yet clear how this will be managed after this summer.
