    Default Flying down the peninsula

    I'm planning on taking a trip from Z41 to Aniakchak Crater over the 4th of July week-end. I will be flying a C-180 on 29in. Bush wheels. I'm hoping for any points of interest and or fishing opportunity along the way. Thanks

    There are lots of weird mushroom shaped rocks in the tide line on the backside of the Inaskin pen. Tuxedeni bay is interesting as is Chisek island. And the active volcanoes enroute are interesting.

    Why not just say Lake Hood strip instead of Z41?

    I'm VERY familiar with that neck of the woods. Operated a C-180 on standard 8.50x6.00 gear during the fishing seasons. PM me and I'll give you some EXCELLENT places, accessible with your C-180, near Aniakchak, Painter Creek, and the Pacific Side . . .

    Float Pilot you only have so many key strokes in this life and Z41 saves me a few of those strokes.

    Reviving this thread. Iím headed up there in a few week in a Skywagon w/ 29ís and am interested in some advance intel.

    The caldera is serious mountain flying. There are a few nice days. I have been down there just to show people the area on nice days probably 20 times, and only about half or less of those were we able to land in the caldera. Those were the times I was going because the weather was nice. I have also been there a lot of times for work both as a scientist on the ground and as a pilot taking people in or near the caldera.

    There are a couple areas good for landing in the caldera, one south of the lake outlet area, the other west of the lake, south of the small domes.

    I have been in the caldera on the ground (working for NPS as a scientist) for up to 2 weeks without any flyable windows if somebody had been trying to come pick us up. I have also been there when the weather is incredible for a few days in a row.

    Lots of good landing options on Cinder blows outside the caldera in all directions if you want to base camp someplace a little more accessible and make flights in and around the caldera, or wait out weather trying to get in.

    I am not afraid to camp with my airplane.

    But I AM afraid to camp with my airplane in that caldera unless the weather forecast is absurdly nice...I have camped in there and had winds exceed 80 kts...kind of destroyed most everything in camp. The mountain makes its own weather.
